Croswell Pilgrim Holiness Church Croswell Wesleyan Church on Sanborn St. Croswell Wesleyan Church 1990 Family Life Center Our Current Building |
In June 1923, the Rev. George Lounds began meeting with a group of seven people in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Branton. Thus the Croswell Wesleyan Church was begun. At that time the church was know as Croswell Pilgrim Holiness Church. Shortly after the first meeting this young church took a step of faith and purchased the original building from the First Baptist Church of Croswell. This building was located at the corner of Sanborn and Church streets. The cost of the building was two thousand five hundred dollars. One thousand was given as a down payment and the balanced was paid in yearly payments of one hundred dollars. For the first twenty-eight years Croswell Wesleyan Church shared a pastor with the church in Jeddo. As God blessed and the church continued to grow it was decided in 1951 that both churches should have their own pastor. Following this decision the Croswell Church paid the Jeddo Church two thousand four hundred dollars for their share of the parsonage at 17 West St. in Croswell. As the church continued to minister to the community and to grow in number the need to expand and improve it’s facilities became evident. With this in mind the Church purchased the two lots on Sanborn Street adjacent to the original building. In the spring of 1960 construction of the building which is now the Rock began (pictured with Sanborn parsonage). The congregation at that time numbered about sixty people. With God’s blessings, sacrificial giving and much donated labor the project was completed and the first service was held in the present building on Easter Sunday 1961. This building is currently being used to as our Youth Center. God has continued His work in the Croswell Wesleyan Church. With the leadership of capable pastors and the work of faithful and loving people there was a steady increase in ministry and attendance. These increases called for continued expansion. In 1971 the Wesley House was purchased. In 1972 Pastor Drury and family moved into the parsonage on Stevenson Street. Later the Wesley House was renovated and enlarged to provide office and educational space. In 1984 we began to use the Wesley Center and in 1985 purchased a parsonage on Lake Street in Lexington for the assistant pastor. And in the spring of 1986 we purchased 38.6 acres on Peck Rd. God has richly blessed the labor of Croswell Wesleyan Church. Not only have we been able to minister to our community and surrounding area, but God has also called out from us those who are serving as pastors, pastor’s wives and missionaries. And He continues to call out young and old from our congregation. Some He has called not with an official position within the church, but has called them to go and share the faith and love that they first found at Croswell Wesleyan. Under the leadership of pastors Drury, Walker and O’Vell the church had more than doubled in size. We had reached capacity in the three buildings that were used on Sunday mornings and through out the week. But though we were full our call from God has not lessened. Indeed it seems our call and mission has increased.
In 1990 the church decided to build on the Peck Road property that was purchased in 1986. This new facility would enable the ministries to grow and these ministries would help the church to become the “area church” that God had called it to be. The first service in this building was May 1991. Since then the church and its ministries have continued to grow under the leadership of pastors Valade (for 2 years) and Dyer (for 9 years). And so, another building project needed to be considered to provide a facility for children’s ministries and fellowship gatherings. Construction on the Family Life Center began in the spring of 2004 and was completed in the fall of 2004. Pastor Ryan Budde is currently serving as senior pastor of Croswell Wesleyan Church. It is under his leadership and vision that this building project was completed. We are convinced that God has led, blessed and provided for our ministry through out our history. The steps of faith we now take will help us to be faithful in that which God has called us to do, and provide a way for Him to continue to show His power and get glory for His name through Croswell Wesleyan Church till He comes again
